Wes

Wes was a youth worker in Derby from the 1980s up to the 2000s.  Baby J and Yogi used to go to his youth club sessions and he encouraged them to practice and perform…

Back in the day you were very influential to the Derby Hip Hop scene as you were a youth worker at the youth club where Baby J and everyone went…

I worked at the Mandela Centre in Normanton. Back then there were two Mandela Centres, there used to be one further down Pear Tree Road and that shut back in 1990 and moved up to where it is now next to the police station. So there was 8 youth workers there at the time a mixture of full time and part time I was one of the full time youth workers and Baby J, Ragga T, Frank and lots of others like Yogi – they used to come down there when they were your guys age (14-18). They used to come down and play pool some of them would do break dancing in the backroom, some would do hair dressing barbering, we’d have discussions and there would always be music playing. Baby J used to come and was always into his music, when he and the others got a bit older they used to go out DJ’ing at local parties, blues dances, and local clubs. At the time it was hard for them to find places to do it. They would always come down and DJ at the youth club sessions. It was just going on back then…
